The Double Life of Kolobok
Named after a character in slavic folklore, this rare tomato of Russian origin really stands of in both looks and flavour. The plants are compact indeterminate, making them very manageable for greenhouse growing. The fruits are round, large cherries, yellow with stripes and anthocyanin. The flavour is impressive, especially for a yellow variety, which usually lean toward fruity and mild. This will definitely be making a re-appearance in our garden.
Indeterminate, regular leaf, early production.
The Double Life of Kolobok - Fairytale
The basic plot is as follows:
A poor elderly couple scrapes together the very last bits of flour in the house and bakes a magical, sentient bun named Kolobok. While cooling on the windowsill, Kolobok comes alive, jumps down, and escapes into the forest. As Kolobok rolls through the woods, he encounters various predators: a rabbit, a wolf, and a bear. Each animal wants to eat him. However, Kolobok cunningly distracts them with a boastful song about escaping his creators, and rolls away before they can catch him. Eventually, Kolobok meets a wily fox who flatters his singing voice. While attempting to sing his song up close and boast about his double life of dodging everyone he meets, Kolobok falls victim to the fox's deception and is eaten. The tale acts as a cautionary story for children about the dangers of running away from home and listening to strangers.
Indeterminate plants are vigorous plants with a vining tendency. They set their fruits at intervals along their stems, and will readily grow side shoots and suckers (shoots from ground level). They need good, strong support, and it is advisable to remove the majority of the side shoots and suckers unless you have plenty of space and fertile soil to allow them to grow to their full potential.See the guide on pruning indeterminates in the resources section of the website for tips.
