Merveille des Marches is a classic, late 19th century French heirloom variety. It dates back to at least the 1880s and was famously documented in Vilmorin-Andrieux's renowned 1885 horticultural catalog, Les Plantes Potagères. A sturdy and compact plant, which produces abundant fruit. I found it best to give this plant multiple leaders. Scarlet red fruit with excellent flavour, and very consistent in size and shape, being around 200g and the ideal size for a slicing/salad tomato. These have a robust and pleasant old fashioned red tomato flavour,
Indeterminate, regular leaf, early-mid season production
Indeterminate plants are vigorous plants with a vining tendency. They set their fruits at intervals along their stems, and will readily grow side shoots and suckers (shoots from ground level). They need good, strong support, and it is advisable to remove the majority of the side shoots and suckers unless you have plenty of space and fertile soil to allow them to grow to their full potential.
