This variety, released in 2024, is part of the extraordinary “My Ukraine” series by Oleksiy Kulik, of Ochtyrka in the Sumy region of Ukraine. Despite the war, he continues to bring us incredible varieties, and this series was designed in reverence to the beauty and strength of his country.
The Dnieper Steppes are a vast grassland and forested area, surrounding the lower and middle regions of the Dnieper River. They stretch across southern and central Ukraine, forming part of the larger Pontic-Caspian steppe, eventually reaching the shores of the Black Sea. Known for its rich, dark soil, the region is particularly fertile and famed for its agricultural output, and pre-war, was responsible for 10-20% of worldwide exports of wheat and barley, but over 50% of the world’s sunflower seed and oil production came from the region. This tomato, with its beautiful gold and orange stripes, is a beautiful representation of the colours that would be seen in the region.
Indeterminate, regular leaved, mid season
Indeterminate plants are vigorous plants with a vining tendency. They set their fruits at intervals along their stems, and will readily grow side shoots and suckers (shoots from ground level). They need good, strong support, and it is advisable to remove the majority of the side shoots and suckers unless you have plenty of space and fertile soil to allow them to grow to their full potential.
