A new creation from Helle Brøgger-Madsen, Danish Dynamite is the world’s first variegated carrot leaf “micro dwarf”. Much like one of its parent plants, Lace, Danish Dynamite is a determinate plant with a cascading habit and does very well in a hanging basket. Although it only grows to 30cm in height, its 50-60cm lateral spread and long, trailing stems mean that to me, it does not tick the box for a true micro. I found that between my plants, variegation was stronger in some than others, but the fruit were consistently round, slightly flattened and striped. They initially ripen to a ochre colour with green stripes and can be consumed at this point, but the longer you leave them, the darker they get. A truly interesting and beautiful plant.
Determinate plants have a bushy habit and should not be pruned.They will set all of their fruit at the same time, and if you look after them, you may get several flushes in the same season.When growing cascading varieties in hanging baskets, care must be taken to make sure that the soil is kept moist, but not waterlogged. Baskets can easily dry out in warm weather, causing the compost to become hyrdophobic. As with all container gardening, feed them regularly for the best growth and harvest.Managed well, they will reward you all season long, and are great plants to have outside the back door, for casual snacking as well as bringing indoors to use.
