Described by breeder Ongweh Ias as “one of the most dependable producers in the history of tomatoes”, Cuautli Salabong had a lot to live up to! With Cuautli being Nahuatl for Eagle, and Salubong being the Tagalog word for “encounter with a bird” (a nod to the use of some Philippino lines in the breeding of this variety), this variety was designed for high production and excellent fruit set in hot weather, without compromising on looks or flavour. Summer 2026 has certainly tested this variety’s drought tollerence and ability to set fruit in high heat. It performed extremely well, needing relatively little watering even when grown in a pot. The plants are semi-determinate, reaching a height of around 1m20 before the weight of the fruit slows growth. I allowed grow as it wanted, without pruning after the first couple of side shoots, and it grew into an extremely attractive plant with a tree-like habit. Fruits are beautifully scalloped, juicy and meaty and full of straight-up tomato flavour, savoury with a hint of umami, making this variety great for both fresh eating and cooking.
Compact indeterminate/semi-determinate growth, up to 1m20. Regular leaf, prolific.
Indeterminate plants set their fruits at intervals along their stems, and will readily grow side shoots and suckers (shoots from ground level). They need good, strong support, and it is advisable to remove some side shoots and suckers unless you have plenty of space and fertile soil to allow them to grow to their full potential.
