This is a variety I have been working on for several years. It is a segregate from Blue Baltic Chocolate F1, producing large, meaty and delicious fruits which are round to oxheart in shape. They have a good amount of antho on the skin, but this absolutely doesn’t translate into the flavour, but just provides extraordinary patterning on the skin. They taste as good as they look, in fact, they are the best tasting thing I have ever grown!
These tomatoes are unique in that they can be eaten at different stages of ripening, giving different flavours. Sliced earlier, while they are soft but still partially green on the outside, they provide a gorgeous tricolour, with lighter, sweeter, more tropical notes to the flavour. But for the best flavour, be sure to allow them to ripen fully, until the burgandy streaking really reaches the bottom. The flavour is rich, dark, meaty, rounded, savoury, umami, with notes of dark spice and brown sugar, and just enough sweetness to make you go for another slice! It is like drinking a glass of good Temperanillo.
Indeterminate, strong vines which might take over a bit, later in the season if it isn’t kept in check! Regular, wispy leaves, ripening mid-season, but they really get going later on when the plants are very established. These give us fruit right into November.
Stability has been well tested, and though these seeds are F5, being from a segregate rather than a new cross means that they are considerably more stable than a new F5. We have seen no issues with stability.
Indeterminate plants are vigorous plants with a vining tendency. They set their fruits at intervals along their stems, and will readily grow side shoots and suckers (shoots from ground level). They need good, strong support, and it is advisable to remove the majority of the side shoots and suckers unless you have plenty of space and fertile soil to allow them to grow to their full potential.
